Bakery Humor
So I was talking to [info]jenett earlier about bread. And I asked her if she wanted the naan recipe I use, and dug it out and gave it to her. And then I said, "Hmm. I haven't made this in ages. I think I'll make naan if I have the stuff for it."

My yeast had a best used by date in late August, 2001. Yes, it has been ages since I made bread, hasn't it? But it proofed up all right, and I have bread dough rising in all its garlicky goodness in the kitchen.

I love kneading dough. The feel of it is so tremendously soothing and comforting. Almost as smooth as wedging porcelain, which I haven't done in ages. Someday . . .


    I say "Oh gods. I was reading Chick tracts earlier. I read the one that suggested that the Catholic practice of the Eucharist was derived from the sacred cookies of the Egyptian sun god, Osiris. I just had to share the joy and laughter."

    I say "Mind, 'The Sacred Cookies of Osiris' is a terrific album title."
    Eastman [[info]annwyd] now has the urge to bake Sacred Cookies of Osiris.
    Eastman says "'Sacred Cookies' would be a pretty cool band name."
    I say "Get an ankh-shaped cookie cutter. And make 'em chocolate, with green sugar sprinkles on top."
    Eastman heee!
    I say "Black and green are Osiris's colours."
    Tesla says "If you truncated the band name to 'Sacred Cookies' you'd have to name the first album 'Hot Gooey Osiris'."
    Eastman says "Sounds good."
    Eastman says "What kind of music would Sacred Cookies play?"
    Tesla says "Or possibly 'Nothing Says Loving Like Osiris in the Oven'."
    Eastman DIES.
    Tesla says "Heavy on the sistrum."



I have weird friends. And I will soon have naan, too.

Addendum: O bliss. I have naan. And for the first time when I made it it puffed up like proper naan. O bliss. So good.

Maybe I should convince [info]suzimoses to make some. I've saved a copy of the recipe.... (Do I look like I trust that the recipe site will be around forever, or even that I'll be able to find the link? *grin*)

It looks like a remarkably flexible recipe, too -- did you read the comments? Apparently it works with yogurt or soy milk in place of the milk, or with 50% whole-wheat flour, or basted with olive oil instead of butter; other suggestions were to mix in rosemary or basil or lots of garlic, or to use it for pizza dough! Also, it can apparently be cooked in a skillet rather than on the grill.

Hmm.... Could do it with whole-wheat flour, and mix in sun-dried tomatos and a bit of basil, and baste with olive oil, and call it California-style naan. *evil grin*

I make 'em in a frying pan.

The shape would be tricky, I suspect, given the behaviour patterns on the dough. You could probably make green ones, though, either with food colouring or basil (or both), and that might be good enough for the purpose.

Also, you are a very, very strange man.

Such an album begs for a parody of "The Muffin Man"..."The Mummy Man", perhaps? (Hey, that even lets you work in Isis: "She's married to the Mummy Man.")

Wow, just got a mental image of Set tricking his brother into lying down in a baking pan instead of a coffin... ;-)

That would make him the Kemetic Dough Boy, yes?

Maybe the first spin-off band could be Osiris and the Cakes of Light. Or, it gives a new spin to the phrase "Osiris Risen."
